My Adventures in Pattern Redesign

Have you ever seen a garment in a magazine or at a shop and said “I could make that”!! We that sew, have all said that to ourselves.
I’ve recently had a customer desire a particular bubble stitched out of some fabric she has. She sent me a picture of the bubble. I don’t know if she has had this one in a smaller size & wants me to stitch up a larger version or if it was a picture taken of one at a store. She has a small check/plaid fabric that she wants this design made up in along with some other fabrics from the Delicate Stitches inventory to embellish it.

Buble Redesign

I’ll take you through the steps in upcoming blog posts.

But first, lower left is the photo that the customer sent me. Upon examining the garment, Children’s Corner Patterns first came to mind. I first thought about “Frannie Baby” which has been a sweet “swing style” short dress with side ties. There is elastic under the arm and matching or coordinating panties can be stitched. What I liked about Frannie Baby was the fact that I used inspiration for adding some fullness to the bubble to be more feminine.  The Children’s Corner recently reissued “Bobbie“, a bubble style that can be made for boy or girl. It too has the elastic under the arm, it is my bubble shell.

So I had a framework from which to start. I’m staying within the same pattern company and one that I know their pattern drafting in compatible. But my “inspiration photo” had a collar. Hummmmm. That brought me to the “Aprons” pattern. This is a newly redesigned & combined pattern of some old favorites within the Children’s Corner Pattern Company’s repertoire, Jenni Leigh/Carol.  This pattern gave me the help I would need for the collar.

So hang in there as I proceed down this path of making one bubble pattern just as my customer wants!
